Ready to run the Dinosaur in the Starlight Run

Every year as part of the Portland Rose festival there are a few parades. The Starlight Parades is a evening parades that is proceeded by a 5K fun run that attracts about 2,000 costumed groups, families and individuals. But the question was “What should we get dressed up as?” We needed killer costumes. Amy said “DINOSAURS!!” and we had a plan and the gears in our heads started turning. We thought big, bright and as light as possible. If we did it right we figured that Papier-mâchéwould be a good solution. So with a glue gun and a few packs of straws we started building the frames. To keep the heads snug and comfortable we made the call early to mount to bicycle helmets. A great foundation to build off. After the heads and tails were all framed out we cut laid up the Papier-mâché and Amy took home to paint. The final look came together with quick trip to good will to get the right color clothing.

When the run day came we were ready for action. Jessica made a HUGE POSTER to show her support! Adam decided that he would join us for the run. We picked up our bibs, got into position and with a blow of the star horn we were off. It was kind of slow going at the beginning with mostly jogging in place as the tightly packed mob of runners slowly started to spread out. The first mile of the run got us warmed up and ready for show time. At mile 2 we hit the parade route to HUGE GROUPS of people shouting and yelling. It was an amazing feeling to have thousands of enthusiastic spectators cheering us on! There were kids watching at the edge of the street and when we ran by we heard “Dinosaurs!!!!!” again and again! It was great to have Jessica, Jeff, Jessica, Rob, Nicole, Josh, Nicora and Erika cheer us on from the side lines. After the run we all went out for dinner and drinks to celebrate. Many thanks to Amy and Jessica for the MANY hours they put in to make the costumes AMAZING! I can’t wait to see what we come up for next year’s run!

  2. Have you ever considered creating an ebook or guest authoring on other blogs?
I have a blog centered on the same information you discuss and would love to have
you share some stories/information. I know my subscribers would appreciate your work.

  3. I’m impressed, I must say. Rarely do I come across a blog that’s
both equally educative and engaging, and let me tell you, you’ve hit the nail on the head. The issue is something which not enough men and women are speaking intelligently about. I am very happy that I stumbled across this in my hunt for something relating to this.
